28.One Day Field Trip to NRC OIL PALM, PEDAVEGI

We started at 07:00am from our college and reached the Oil palm research centre, Pedavegi at about 09:50am.The research institute extension officer Dr.Prasad invited us to their auditorium; there we were given with a 45 minutes introduction lecture about the research work done in the institute. Later we were taken onto their fields which are comprised about 150 hectares. There we were shown how different species of palm trees are grown and how hybrid varieties are being produced. Later we were privileged to visit their biotechnology, microbiology, tissue culture, biochemistry, entomology laboratories where we were shown different instruments and the research work done on palm oil seeds. And also visited their library and museum. The museum contains a variety of useful materials produced from the palm trees taking from palm oil to the different pulp bags and utensils.
At around 12:15pm we were shown a documentary film regarding the culturing and cultivating of palm trees in that institute. At around 01:15pm we had our lunch at cool garden restaurant near Eluru. At about 02:30pm we turned back to Pedavegi to visit a regional government oil processing unit (factory). There we were explained how palm oil is being produced from the palm seeds. we were also shown the different types of machines used in that industry. Later at the end we had an interaction with the manager of the processing unit regarding various doubts expressed by our students.
At about 05:30pm we started our journey back to Vijayawada and reached the college at 07:30pm.Finally we had a nice fun as well as gained a lot of knowledge by this visit.

Thank to Oil palm Research centre Pedavegi and management of ALC .And Staff members of Botany dept.

The Dept of the Botany &Microbiology had arranged a one day field trip to CTRI Rajahmundry for the students of final year opting tissue culture subject elective, the trip was started at 7:00am on 11-dec-2007 from college. And nearly 60 students had taken part in the trip. About 11:30 am we reached the CTR1, Rajahmundry
There Dr.T.Krishna Murthy , technical officer, Agricultural extension ,CTR1 had intuited us with a warm welcome and he gave a brief introduction about the institute and then we had the privilege of spectating a 40 mins film on the research and cultivation practices on which the institution is working.
Next to that the students visited different labs associated in the institute, via: Smoke Research Laboratory where we have shown with SRL machine which is used to estimate the quality of the cigarettes.

Then we went to microbiology lab, where Dr.Subhashini, principal scientist had explained different micro organisms on which the research programme is going on. Finally after lunch at 2:00pm , we moved to kadiyam where the different plant species were grown in a nursery. And we had the chance to observe different plant varieties which are rare.

We had returned to home by 10:00 pm night. On an enquiry the students’ responded well about the trip and expressed their views, that the trip was very joyful, informative and explorative.

DREAMS COMES TRUE …FLORA OF ANDHRA LOYOLA COLLEGE
HAS BLOSSOMED

I am proud of the department of Botany which undertook this important task of identifying the botanical species of our campus. Under the leadership of Heads of the Department of the past namely Late Mr.S.N Ramaswamy, Late Dr.k.Bhagat Singh, Mr. Ramakrishna, DR.N.Appanna, Mr.D.Lakshmnana Rao, Fr.Dr.S.Emmanuel.SJ and Dr.J.chandrashekar Rao this department has been growing in leaps and bounds. At this point of time this department boats of UG students and PG probably a historical record for its student strength. This department is blessed with a herbarium, a herbal garden, a botanic garden and a research lab with a plant tissue culture lab facilities. It has given birth to the Departments of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Thanks to the efforts of the Management, our predecessors, the dream of the department has come true and the Flora of Andhra Loyola College has blossomed.
My special appreciation and congratulations go to Mrs.B.Siva kumari, who through her hard work and initiatives and the support rendered by the final year students and the supporting staff, achieved the fruits of her labour.
Andhra Loyola College (Autonomous) is proud of its NAAC accreditation and enjoys Centre with potential for Excellence status. The campus area covers an area of 98 acres looks beautiful with its avenue trees and lush green grass land the vegetation offers a cool, serene and pleasant atmosphere for the tired minds and hearts. The Biodiversity of this campus is 54 years old & is enriched with ornamental, medicinal and commercial plants. There are also large gigantic avenue trees and rare sps. Mention must be made of the Cranes and parrots which take shelter in our huge trees and 600 walkers who come daily to our campus. Best Ecofriendly College award was given to our College by the Acharya Nagarjuna University for the academic year 2006 -2007.It is no exaggeration to state that the Temperature of our Campus is 2-3 centigrade less when compared to the out side city. We hope that this small compendium of the flora of the Campus will serve as a reference book for the students and Researchers. May God bless all those who are instrumental in realizing this project.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Introduction

“The purpose of conservation: The greatest good to the greatest number of people for the longest time.”

In modern times consumer society has increased our greed and as a result biodiversity of the world has been systematically destroyed for the sake of development. In this contest conservation and preservation of Flora and Fauna assumes great Importance. Our College and Dept of Botany in their efforts to promote conservation of biodiversity launched a project called, “FLORA OF ANDHA LOYOLA COLLEGE” in order to collect the plant species, identify them, record them accurately and preserve them in the Herbarium. For The last two years the Dept of the Botany has been conducting a field survey for a period of 90 days in our campus and succeeded in collecting 345 species and preservation of the same in our herbarium. Identification of the species were carried out by our taxanomists. It has been determined that there are 125 important herbs of which most of them are of medicinal value.120 plants are Shrubs in which one can identify many are commercially important Ornamental plants. There is 90 Arbor sent species of which many are shade giving .Timber yielding and Fruit yielding. The rest of the flora consists of Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms. Besides there are 20 rare and unique plants, which add to the richness of our biodiversity.

The Campus flora of Andhra Loyola College is presented alphabetically in this book. It consists of botanical names, family and common names. Pictures of some plants are also given for easy Identification and also their Medicinal importance. This book is quite informative and meant to be of great help to those who are interested in academic and research investigations
